Violence Against Women in Times of War by Crystal Middlestadt We are now at a very crucial period in the movement to eradicate violence against women. Following the events of Sept. 11, the news on virtually every station featured a white wealthy male expert to interpret the situation and awaken the patriotism of the masses with carefully chosen war rhetoric. Once again, the mainstream media was flooded with violent and militant notions of conflict resolution. Full Story...
A Feminist Herstory Parting the mists of time I see huge trees growing on hills by the ocean. A dark line appears on the horizon, growing thicker, coming closer, birds! Soon they fill the sky casting everything into the flickering darkness of roaring wings. For hours they pass and disappear over the hills. Up in the headwaters of a river, silver-red salmon leap sparkling waterfalls on their journey home. Full Story...
Porn as Power: a Fallacy of Liberation There is much defense in Eugene (and other places) of the use of pornography as a tool for sexual liberation. Very few activists are willing to target purveyors of pornography, who have turned sexuality into a commodity, but they are quite ready to target other oppressive businesses, like Nike. Often this is because they fail to see that pornography has less to do with liberation or free speech than it does with commerce. Full Story...
Don't Let Oppression Silence You The ancient forests are powerful places. They hold a sacred magic and speak a wisdom that is beyond words. This wisdom and magic may not be describable, but to everyone who listens, it's clear that the message they offer has nothing to do with domination, hierarchy, intolerance, or uncontrolled anger and aggression. | Opinion | Editorial There's been quite a stir over the Eugene Weekly in the last month and a half or so. For those who haven't been following it, here's a quick summary:
In October EW printed a full-page color ad for a local porn shop inside the back cover of their guide to Eugene. Some unknown party stuck "smut" and "sleaze" stickers on some of their distribution boxes. EW editor, Ted Taylor, responded by sticking up for the business, calling it "legitimate" and adding that it "caters to both men and women." He also told the perpetrators of the stickering to "Lighten up. Buy a dildo. Have some fun." Full Story...

Reviews | The Anniversary/The Mars Volta/Longshot/Les Savy Fav/Ugly Casanova Review
The Mars Volta put on an incredible show, both in Portland and in Eugene. This new band is a great mix of experimental funk and rock 'n' roll. Omar and Cedric from At the Drive In are a part of this new band that has yet to release any recordings. Cedric produced distorted echoed screams while Omar, with his afro and tight buttpants, threw his guitar around his back and started dancing erratically. Full Story...
